Site: Flames and Flickers Majorette Group In 1960 a group of individuals from the North Washington area got together and decided to organize a marching unit for the young people of the area. The President of the North Washington Fire Department became very interested in an organization such as this, and thus, with the backing of the fire department and the leadership of Les Bell - the Corp was established. The original Corp consisted of twenty-three members and they were originally known as the "Starlighters." In the beginning there were no drums, just taped music from a recorder which was mounted on the truck following the unit. After a period of time where drummers were included in the group, the Corp once again marches with speakers mounted to the van - only to a somewhat different beat of music than in those early years. Today the organization is recognized throughout the area as the "Flames & Flickers." The organization is self-supporting and has been sponsored by the North Washington Volunteer Fire Department for its entire existence. As the years passed the organization grew in size and has attracted members from the entire Butler County area. Approximately 1000 individuals have been affiliated with the group over the past 40 years. As in any organization, the group has experienced growth as well as those times when interest was low, but through it all the group has continued to serve as "Ambassadors" for the North Washington Rodeo which is held each year in the "Rodeo Capital of the East" - North Washington, Pennsylvania.
